The crime rate in Morocco is not high and fortunately crime against tourists is relatively rare, but it does happen.
Make sure that you keep your luggage and money secure. When walking around the souks or any crowded area ensure that you have a secure bag and keep it close to you. Generally, you should not take too much money with you when you are shopping. Pickpockets operate in Morocco as well!
You must carry your passport with you at all times. Alternatively, as a tourist, it is generally acceptable for you can leave your passport in your hotel and carry a photocopy of the relevant pages with you. However, if you are travelling around Morocco you must carry your passport with you at all times.
It is a good idea to keep a photocopy of your passport among your belongings should it be lost or stolen. If your passport is lost or stolen you should contact the British Embassy in Morocco as soon as possible.
Below is the website of the British Embassy, which is based in Rabat
https://www.gov.uk/government/world/organisations/british-embassy-rabat
There is also a Consulate in Marrakech - British Honorary Consulate Marrakech.
The British Embassy’s advice: ‘if you are in Morocco and you need urgent help (for example, you’ve been attacked, arrested or someone has died), call +212 (0) 537 633 333.
You should consider visiting your health professional at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures e.g. polio and tetanus injections.
Morocco has a very low level of malaria. However, if you are trekking or travelling in the countryside (depending upon the time of year) you should try to avoid insect bites. You can use mosquito/insect repellent to unprotected skin (around hands, feet, neck) and cover up well especially around dusk. DEET is usually recommended for adults but there are other repellents available for children’s use.
Other hazards Morocco has snakes and scorpions, which can be dangerous. It is advisable to wear shoes at all times if in the countryside or the Sahara. Don’t put on your shoes without shaking them first – something may have crawled inside.
Heat Morocco can be extremely hot. Ensure that you are covered up and are using a suitable high screen sun block. Wearing a hat or scarf is also a good idea. It is possible to suffer from heatstroke if you don’t take suitable precautions.
One of the more general problems is that people do not drink enough water. Please make sure you drink enough – even when you don’t feel thirsty.
Tap water It is possible to drink the tap water and it is generally safe to do so. However, you could find you have a stomach bug during your stay as the water is different to the water in the UK. Therefore, to be safe and keep well it is suggested that you should drink bottled water during your holiday. This is particularly important if you are travelling or trekking in the countryside.
Common ailments can be an upset stomach or diarrhoea. You should be careful what you eat and perhaps consider some medication from a pharmacy. Many of the pharmacies will speak English, especially in Marrakech.
Please refer to the Government website for current travel information and health considerations.
Most of the cities operate a bus service between the cities and this can be one of the cheapest ways to get around.
Alternatively, you can use the ‘Grand Taxis’, which is a large car and can take up to 6 passengers and travels between the various cities. These taxis leave when they are full and Grand Taxis are a little more expensive than the bus.
You can also travel by train to the major cities, e.g. Marrakech to Casablanca or Rabat.
In the cities, there are also the ‘Petit Taxis’ that operate around the city. These small taxis have an official taxi fare counter, although many taxi drivers try to negotiate a price without using the counter.
