Introduction
This is a two-day tour with an overnight stay in a desert camp to give you a taste of the Sahara, especially if your time is limited. However, you should not underestimate the travel times and how long it takes to travel around Morocco.
You should be prepared to travel around 6 hours per day. The distance to the Sahara from Marrakech is long and you will be travelling over the Atlas Mountains on your way.
DAY 1
This is an early start leaving Marrakech at 07:00, crossing the High Atlas Mountains by way of Tizi-n-Tichka (alt 2260 m). There will be amble opportunities to stop (take photos) and enjoy the panoramic views and many Berber villages along the way.
Lunch will be in Ouarzazate and includes a visit to the Kasbah of Taourirt. This was constructed by Pacha Glaoui (he was a member of one of rich families in the area at the time). You will continue on your journey passing villages such as Agdez and Tinzouline along the way. You should arrive at Zagora around 17:30. You can then take an 1hr/1.5hour camel ride to the desert camp. This will be a gentle ride across small sand dunes, reaching a Berber tent in the Sahara for a night in the desert. Alternatively, you can travel to the camp by 4x4.
You should arrive at the camp before sunset and you can enjoy seeing the setting of the sun over the Sahara. Dinner will be provided in the tents and you will also sleep in tents under the stars.
DAY 2
You can get up before dawn and watch the sunrise over the Sahara dunes and enjoy breakfast.
After sunrise and breakfast, you will travel in the 4x4 from the camp and begin your journey back to Marrakech.
On your way back to Marrakech, you will stop at Ouarzazate for lunch and a visit to the Atlas Film Studios. Many famous movies were shot in the local area, for example, Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Romancing the Stone, Babel. Next will be a stop at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, which has been declared a world heritage site.
Then you will continue on the last leg of the journey travelling over the Atlas Mountains again and down into Marrakech. As before there will be time to stop for photos and a break along the way. You should arrive back to Marrakech around 18:30/19:00.
