Introduction
This is a four-day tour with three overnight stays: two nights in a hotel; and one night in a desert camp at Merzouga to see the Sahara.
You should not underestimate the travel times and how long it takes to travel around Morocco. You should be prepared to travel around 6 hours per day. The distance to the Sahara from Marrakech is long and you will be travelling over the Atlas Mountains (described by many as some of the world’s most beautiful mountains). The road climbs up from Marrakech and weaves its way over high mountain passes, hairpin bends and spectacular scenery. Then drops down the other side to travel to the Sahara.
DAY 1
This is an early start leaving Marrakech at 07:00, crossing the High Atlas Mountains by way of Tizi-n-Tichka (alt 2260 m). As this is a private tour, there will be amble opportunities to stop (take photos) and enjoy the panoramic views and many Berber villages along the way.
Lunch will be at a restaurant in Ouarzazate and includes a visit to the Kasbah of Taourirt. This was constructed by Pacha Glaoui (he was a member of one of rich families in the area at the time).
You will continue on our journey passing villages such as Skoura and Lbour along the way. You should arrive at your hotel at Gorges des Dades around 17:00.
DAY 2
After breakfast, you will visit Gorges des Dades, which is a short journey from your hotel. Then travel towards Tinghir to visit Todra Gorges in time for lunch at around 12:00/12:30. After lunch you will continue on to Merzouga via Erfoud and Rissani. You should arrive in Merzouga around 17:00/17:30.
You can then take an 1hr/1hr 20 min camel ride to the desert camp. This will be a ride across the sand dunes, reaching a Berber tent in the Sahara for a night in the desert. Alternatively, you can travel to the camp by 4x4.
You should arrive at the camp before sunset to enjoy seeing the setting of the sun over the Sahara. Dinner will be provided in the tents and you will sleep in tents under the stars.
